Before I go on about how the Rose is a poorly designed sub, let’s talk about Logan and Cait.

We got a brief peek into what Cait and Logan used to be, and I promise we’ll get more of them on the Rose, but right now I feel we’re establishing this thread, and so what can be said about them has been said. I’ll recap and see if I missed anything:

Cait and Logan served as shipmates on the COS freighter, the Fairchild, under Captain Nolan. They both spent a couple years here, and though it is never said, this is where they met and became friends. Logan mentioned rank-grinding, a practice that many of Cait and Logan’s shipmates engaged in: basically, working as long and as hard as they could to ascend up the rank ladder. In many ways, it’s similar to level-grinding on World of Warcraft or the like, except they get real money out of it, and a rank that can travel with them on any COS ship. And Cait must have made enough overtime for the Rose, the refurbishment, and a crew. And so, as Logan said, freedom.

Have I ever talked about the Civilian Navy, and what it is? No? Well, then. The idea behind the Civilian Navy was that merchants working in the COS could have a way to tell if a hire was qualified or not. So, the merchants who came up with the Civilian Navy patterned it after the real navy, with ranks and a uniform, and bases and the like. One can be enlisted or an officer, a sales associate or manager, in retail terms. A captain in the COS has demonstrated a set of skills that make him or her qualified to run a boat, either on their own or under an owner. And the captain has the ability to promote a crew member on the spot.

Cait has a weird problem on her hands: her crew is all officers and no enlisted crew. Tre and Xiphos are Lieutenant Commander and a high-level Ensign, and Billy is a Medical Officer. Nina isn’t enrolled in the CN system, nor is Toby, and the Travelers fall under their own organizations.

I’m sure this is fascinating. All I really have to say about the Rose is that the cargo bay is too much wasted space, but that could be fixed by dropping another module in. I’ll talk about this in a later post.

As for Cait and Xiphos, Logan has made them both anxious, bringing up old memories for both, and adding to problems both are having. And I have to agree with Milly when she says so, but Xiphos is really cute when she is drunk and sad and vulnerable.

As always, I’d love to hear your questions and comments. What have I missed?
