One of the things I really like about Cait and Xiphos’s relationship is that Cait trusts her tremendously. For six hours every day, the Rose belongs to Xiphos. There’s trust there that Xiphos can handle herself and the Rose, alone, for a good part of the day. Granted, Cait’s about fifteen feet away during those six hours, but Xiphos only wakes Cait if she needs to. And even when Cait is awake during this section, she doesn’t try to take the command away from Xiphos.

During this late hour, we get to see Cait drop her guard a little. And that lets Xiphos drop hers in return. Down the line, not now, but later, I’d like to explore how Xiphos came to the Rose, and why Cait trusts her so much.

I want to try something here: a cut scene. This scene was originally from Cait’s POV, looking at Xiphos. Something got mentioned in this scene, but thrown out when I redrafted it. I want to put it in the notes at the very least, if only because I want to come back to it, and I’ll do it properly when I do. So, the scene:

Off in the distance, right before visibility dropped away, she could see the rippling lights of fish. This was an odd occurrence. Fish from the deep rarely came up this far. Usually, it was because the Wanderers had been through.
Xiphos seemed to have followed Cait’s train of thought, tapped on her keyboard. One of her displays changed, pulling out information from the Relay. She must have had the buoy up. “Nothing, sir. No Wanderer sightings at all.”
“Good to hear,” Cait said slowly.

Wanderers. Something they worry about. For now, we’ll have to leave that for another place.

As always, any questions or comments you have are very much welcome.
