As we talked about last week, the Firebrand is a camp that positions itself to be a rehabilitation camp, a camp for kids who are about to lose their lives to drugs or the streets or both. Worried parents send their kids here when they feel they have no other options. Something we’ll discuss later on is how Toby’s parents got this idea, the idea that he’s dangerously close to killing himself, and whether or not he deserves to go to camp.

And then, pirates. We haven’t been formally introduced yet, but there are pirates on this planet, and they tend to strike often, especially unaided merchant ships like the Rose. I can’t really talk much about the pirates at the moment, because any questions you have about them will be answered later. We can, however, review the facts that we know: there was a pirate attack somewhere between Port New Haven and Anchorhead, in the South Ocean, the attack was done by someone named Burian Lake, and apparently, that’s a big deal. And that’s all I can say right now.

Also, I love the game Cait plays with Xiphos here, where Xiphos is teasing Toby about pirates, asking if he had ever seen one, and Cait says “we go through.” Xiphos’s response, “but… pirates!” had to have gotten some satisfaction out of Cait, as if she was trying to say, “see, you’re not so tough.”

As always, any questions or comments you have are totally welcome.
