We’ve met pretty much everyone at this point, or they have been at least named and placed on the Rose. Well, that’s not true. Let me try again. We’ve pretty much met the crew of the Rose at this point. Hopefully over the course of the next year or so we’ll get to know them pretty well, too.

Cait is supposed to be Scottish, or was back when this story took place on a future Earth, back before I merged a couple of universes to get Ta Ante. If you listen closely, though, she talks like Stephen Fry. When it comes down to it, I can replicate cadence and word choice, but the accent doesn’t translate without me spelling it out like I hear it, and I’ve always considered that insulting. The other way to convey nationality through speech is regional slang, and Cait is far too educated to drop slang, thought I can think of maybe one or two occasions when she would. Other than that, no dice.

So there’s that. That’s all I really have today; I’m sick and it’s hot outside, so it’s hot inside, too. I’m trying to use our new window air conditioner sparingly, because that thing can suck down the watts like nothing else.

As usual, I’d love to hear any questions or comments you may have.

Interesting. I pictured Cait’s speaking to be more like Janeway…. “just get it underway” I like it. Have you drawn a map? Can we see this painting? =)D

  2. milly says:

I too, had visions of Janeway while reading. Well, I made her more of what I always wanted Janeway to be. Needless to say, I like her.
PICTURE! I want to see the painting too! It seems.. ominous..

I liked Janeway a lot (and Tuvok… and that’s about it), but I don’t think I drew that much inspiration from Voyager, except how not to handle the characters. I’m trying to think of other woman captains I’ve draw from, but really, how many are there? Janeway could have been so much, and the Voyager show runners (mostly Rick Berman) ruined it. Want to know why Janeway came off as wooden and soulless? Because that’s how she was directed to be. So, yeah, I want to make a Janeway that doesn’t suck.

I do have a map, but you won’t see it for two reasons:

    1) It has spoilers.
    2) It’s incorrect. The planet has changed a little bit since I made the map. I need to remake it. When I do, I’ll post it.

PS – Fun Star Trek fact: The woman they got to play Uhura in the new movie did actually play a woman captain… in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. She first shows up on Tortuga. She slapped Captain Sparrow for losing her boat.

    Aaaaannnd…

  6. milly says:

    OOOHH I REMEMBER HER
it’s bad luck to bring a woman aboard..
